Daily news shows

The World from Public Radio International

One hour news show, every weekday from 4pm to 5pm.

STRENGTHS:

Good for children, features a daily geography quiz.

WEAKNESS:

In my opinion, PRI’s THE WORLD presents a dumbed-down version of the news. Its pedantic voices express but a detached curiosity about the world outside our borders, and its interviews are conducted with an apalling schoolchild’s incredulousness at world events and consequences.

Fresh Air with Terri Gross

One hour interview show, airs 3pm to 4pm every weekday.
STRENGTH:
Entertaining, personal, usually in-depth interviews.

WEAKNESS:
When you criticize Fresh Air for not covering political subjects, the response is always: well, “it’s an entertainment show, it’s not a news program.”

But when Terry Gross interviews a political figure, it’s almost always someone on the right.

Why couldn’t she interview whistleblowers, activists and writers who’ve spoken out against the war? I’ll add to this review the names of some very compelling voices. Arundhati Roy, Vandana Shiva, Noam Chomsky, Mordecai Vanunu, Howard Zinn, Greg Palast, Robert Fisk, Naomi Klein, Cynthia McKinney, Sibel Edmunds. I’ll bet you can guess where you can hear these voices.

BBC World Service

STRENGTH:
The BBC news is one of the most respected news service in the world.
WEAKNESS:
This not the BBC as heard by the rest of the world. The BBC WORLD SERVICE is a program tailored specifically for the American public. This way it doesn’t present too different a view from what FOX, CNN or MSNBC.

Just as CNN has its CNN INTERNATIONAL, the BBC must compete in the world news market against AL JAZEERA and DW. The international markets still require unspun reporting. The European newspaper world is also much more vigorous and keeps the BBC honest.

The rest of the world is always dismayed at the American public’s lack of access to what’s really going on. The BBC WORLD SERVICE only gives Americans the illusion they are hearing the news from outside the box. In my opinion.
