FEEDBACK: “FUND-DRIVE JITTERS”
We’ve learned that this website was considered “bad timing” with respect to the coming Fall Fund Drive. KRCC is nervous that some members might withhold their donations.
The efforts of the Pikes Peak Media Alliance, through the MyKRCC website, are not meant to threaten KRCC. This website is a forum for its listeners. For change or not. And the PPMA itself has been organizing letters and petitions to Colorado College for over a year now.
We regret that the station feels added pressure in these days before their Fall Fund Drive. We hope that no member or sponsor withholds their support, of course. But KRCC members should be able to get a word in. Our donations should not be taken for granted.
Not everyone believes the scare tactics used to oppose change. Remember: this is the time of year when KRCC says they want to hear from their listeners. Let’s make them listen!
Isn’t this issue of “timing” is a little misplaced? Here we are on the eve of the November elections. PPMA most regrets that we’ve gotten this close to the election without having seen more freedom of the press at KRCC, improvements which might have made a difference in informing the Colorado Springs voters.

CC President Richard Celeste
Dear Stephen Elder and President Richard Celeste,
As a KRCC listener and Colorado Springs community member devoted to positive and progressive media, I ask you to help bring the nationally syndicated news program Democracy Now! to our community radio station. A diverse and balanced voice has become increasingly difficult to find in this age of corporate-controlled media. It is up to us to make sure that our community radio station, KRCC, maintains a high level of integrity during this critical period of deregulation.
I request that Democracy Now! join National Public Radio and BBC World broadcasts to offer the Colorado Springs community broader and more comprehensive news coverage.
Democracy Now! is a two hour-long daily news broadcast covering domestic and international affairs. Offered via KU-band satellite and as broadcast quality MP3 computer files, this program easily fits into any available time slot. Democracy Now! offers a six month free trial period, during which KRCC can gather feedback from community members. Listener demand for Democracy Now! will prove that it deserves a prime time slot. Aired by over 270 radio stations nationwide including KGNU in Boulder and KDUR in Durango, the program is the recipient of awards such as the George Polk award and the 2003 NFCB Golden Reel for the Best National News Story.
Thank you for considering this request to air Democracy Now on KRCC.
Sincerely,
___ I am a member of KRCC.
___ I would seriously consider being a member if Democracy Now! received a prime time slot.
___ I will become a member if KRCC gives Democracy Now! a prime time slot.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. Also be sure to send out your LETTER TO COLORADO COLLEGE as soon as possible. You’ll find it under “ACTIONS.” Print it out and make copies for your friends.
FEEDBACK: “NO IN-HOUSE FACT-CHECKING”
People who have called KRCC to suggest they carry DEMOCRACY NOW have been told that Democracy Now does not have its own “in-house fact-checking” like NPR and other larger news organizations. Apparently KRCC cannot be exposing itself to liability by airing Democracy Now.
We called DEMOCRACY NOW to ask about a lack of “in-house fact-checking.” We learned the argument is an old canard, a standard reply from NPR member stations! We were told that the argument had been used against Pacifica Radio content during the early years when their news efforts grew up from the grassroots. A decade ago Pacifica news shows were admittedly spirited examples of advocacy journalism. Not so any longer. Democracy Now, for example, reaches millions of households through radio and television and features a growing staff of reporters and researchers. Their many journalism awards attest to their performance and accuracy.
DEMOCRACY NOW suggested this retort: In this past year of scandalous misreporting, who is NPR to try to disparage Democracy Now for accuracy?
